One of the key features of Christian homes at Christmas is the Nativity Scene. We have the great St. Francis of Assisi to thank for this tradition. In 1223, Francis, a deacon at the time, was visiting the town of Grecio, Italy to celebrate Christmas. According to his biographer, St. Bonaventure, Francis wanted to excite the inhabitants of Grecio to commemorate the Nativity of the Infant Jesus with great devotion. After seeking the permission of the pope, Francis created a living Nativity Scene. He prepared a manger, and brought hay, and an ox and an ass to the place where Mass was to be celebrated.

Today, our own crèches are a visible reminder of that night when Jesus was born. The central focus of the Christmas Market will be dozens of crèches from all corners of our diocese and of the world. Bishop Marcel Damphousse will close the 2013 Agora Christmas Market with the blessing of the crèches beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 8th.
